Michael Carrick has described the clash between Manchester United and Liverpool as one of football’s most iconic fixtures, insisting the rivalry remains “special” despite neither side being in the Premier League title race this season.
The two English giants will face off at Old Trafford on Sunday, with both clubs firmly on course to secure qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League.
Speaking ahead of the encounter, Carrick said the fixture continues to stand out due to its history, intensity, and emotional significance.
“It’s certainly one of my favourite games—without doubt a standout,” he said. “There are big rivalries, but this one is right up there because of the history, the emotion, and the excitement it always brings.”
Both clubs, tied as England’s most successful sides with 20 league titles each, head into the match in strong league positions. United currently sit third, three points ahead of Liverpool, with a top-five finish guaranteeing Champions League football next season.
Carrick also highlighted United’s significant improvement compared to last season, when they endured a disappointing campaign.
“This shows how much the team has progressed,” he said. “We’re in a strong position, coming off good results, and focused on moving forward.”
Despite the tight race between the two sides, the United boss emphasised that his team is treating the clash as a standalone fixture rather than focusing on league permutations.
“It’s a one-off game. We know how close things are, but our focus is on the performance,” he added.
Carrick also praised young midfielder Kobbie Mainoo following his new five-year contract, describing him as a key part of the club’s future.
“He’s done fantastic, and there’s so much more to come from him,” Carrick said. “He’s in a really good place right now.”
The highly anticipated showdown is expected to deliver another chapter in one of football’s fiercest rivalries, with both teams aiming to strengthen their push for a top-four finish.
