Afro-Beats Star Ms. Bodega and Saxophonist Connell Thompson Perform for Ghana’s President at FOCOS Charity Gala in NYC

International Afro-beats singer Ms. Bodega and rising saxophonist Connell Thompson delivered a special performance for Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo at the prestigious 2019 FOCOS Charity Ball in New York City. Held on September 23 at the renowned 583 Park Avenue venue in Manhattan, the event aimed to raise funds for spinal surgeries in Africa through the Foundation of Orthopedics and Complex Spine (FOCOS).

The performance, which included the Ghanaian national anthem and the President’s favorite song “Oye,” was in honor of President Akufo-Addo, who received a Humanitarian Award on behalf of Ghana for his contributions to the foundation’s cause. The gala attracted high-profile guests such as FOCOS founder Dr. Oheneba Boachie-Adjei, civil rights leader Rev. Jesse Jackson, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, Ghanaian actor Boris Kodjoe, and designer Kwaku Bediako of Chocolate Clothing.

Ms. Bodega, an Israeli-New Yorker of Moroccan and Spanish descent, has made significant inroads into the African music scene, collaborating with top African artists. Following the success of her hit single “Watta” featuring Nigerian reggae legend Timaya, her latest release “Shoko” features a diverse lineup of artists, including Nigeria’s CDQ and Toby Grey, BM from Congo, and Benin’s Fanicko. She also teased an upcoming collaboration with BET Award winner Eddy Kenzo from Uganda, produced by Nigerian hitmaker Young D.

Speaking about her involvement in the event, Ms. Bodega said, “It was a true honor to perform for President Nana Akufo-Addo and the First Lady, Rebecca Akufo-Addo, and to support this incredible cause. We are dedicated to bridging cultures and continents through music, and we look forward to continuing our collaborations with Ghana and Africa. Dr. Boachie-Adjei’s commitment to improving healthcare in Africa is truly inspiring, and we are proud to support the foundation’s mission.”
