In Abuja, 21,438 cars failed the roadworthiness test in 2022 — FCTA

According to information released by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), between January and November 2022, 21,438 cars in Abuja failed the roadworthiness test.
Approximately 1,120 traffic violators were prosecuted in front of a magistrate seated in a mobile court, according to the administration.

The administration claims that the unusual statistics came from the thorough inspection that the cars underwent at the Computerized Vehicle Inspection facility.
At an annual news conference over the weekend, FCTA Secretary of Transportation Secretariat Abdullahi Candido revealed this information. He said that out of the 37, 572 vehicles assessed, only 16, 198 were deemed worthy.

Candido blamed the high failure rate on the haphazard entry of fairly old cars, or “tukumbo,” into the nation.

He pointed out that after being engaged in an accident or experiencing flooding in their own nations, the majority of these cars received facelifting from their original owners.
The Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS) has been mandated to subject all vehicles to a computerized test prior to the renewal of car documents, he revealed, even though he acknowledged that the suburbs’ poor road networks and maintenance cultures play a significant role in the failure of these vehicles.

Documents that were made available also showed that 3,532 out of 54,620 applicants for driver’s licenses were not able to obtain one due to test failure.

A mandatory correctional training program for 4,401 misbehaving drivers was also reported to have been sent within the year in an effort to reduce traffic-related offenses in the Federal Capital Territory.
Prior to receiving a Riders Certification Card, about 850 dispatch riders were also required to complete the DRTS mandated training.
