‘I Can’t Begin to Explain How Depressing It’s Been’ — Falz Speaks Out on Nigeria’s Ethnic & Religious Divisions
Share
Nigerian rapper and activist Falz (real name Folarin Falana) has voiced deep frustration with the state of his country, saying the ongoing use of tribal and religious divisions by political forces has left him feeling disheartened.
In a reaction triggered by a social-media post from fellow entertainer Nasboi, who urged Nigerians to place national interest above ethnic and religious loyalties, Falz lamented how easily these fault lines continue to be exploited.
Falz said: “I cannot begin to explain how depressing it has been in recent years, seeing tribal and religious sentiments still being used to turn us against each other. At some point we need to start thinking for ourselves.”
He argued that many of Nigeria’s leadership and political players — rather than solving systemic problems like corruption and economic stagnation — choose division because it distracts citizens and preserves status quo.
The commentary comes amid rising tensions online between Christian and Muslim youths, following news that US President Donald Trump had reportedly threatened military action in Nigeria to protect Christians from terrorist attacks.
Falz’s stance spotlights a broader conversation about national identity, governance and citizen engagement in Nigeria.

He insists that meaningful progress will only come when Nigerians stop allowing ethnicity and religion to define their political choices — and instead demand accountability, transparency, and unity.
He emphasised that change doesn’t begin at the ballot box alone: it begins with individual thinking. “We must stop letting religion and tribe be used as weapons of distraction,” he said.
As one of Nigeria’s most outspoken artist-activists, Falz continues to use his public platform not just for music but for societal commentary.
His call to Nigerians — think independently, reject division, and hold leaders accountable — is his latest intervention into the ongoing debate over what direction the country will take in the years ahead.
