The Deputy National President of the Nigerian Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture (NACCIMA), Dr. Emi-Membere Otaji, has emphasized the need for a stronger public-private sector partnership to stimulate investments and foster economic growth in Rivers State. Otaji made this statement during the opening ceremony of the 2023 Correspondents’ Week in Port Harcourt, which was organized by the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigerian Union of Journalists in collaboration with the Mayor of Housing. The event focused on the theme, “Rivers State and Quest for Ideal Investment Climate: Role of the Media.”

In his keynote speech, Otaji expressed regret that, despite being the oil and gas capital of Nigeria, many key oil-related decisions and activities are centered in Lagos. He called for intentional infrastructure development across the state’s 23 local government areas (LGAs) and highlighted the importance of supporting small and medium enterprises (SMEs), which he stated are vital for job creation and economic growth.

“There must be deliberate infrastructural development across all LGAs to curb urban-rural migration, and we must support SMEs, which employ more people than the public sector,” Otaji said, urging Rivers State to replicate the business-friendly strategies of Lagos and Ogun states, which have successfully attracted investments.

Mr. My-Ace China, CEO of Construction and Housing Mayor Limited, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the need for the Rivers State government and media to actively promote a positive image of the state to potential investors. He noted the growing frustration over capital flight from Port Harcourt to Lagos and called for action to improve the state’s investment climate.

The Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel, Amaechi Okonkwo, further urged the media to embrace responsible journalism that fosters peace and unity in Rivers State, which is essential for attracting and retaining investments.

The event underscored the need for collaboration between the government, private sector, and media to create a conducive environment for investments, improve infrastructure, and support SMEs in Rivers State.
