Preparations are in top gear for the much-anticipated 2023 edition of the Idoma International Carnival, widely regarded as the largest celebration north of the Niger. The annual cultural fiesta, which has grown into a significant event over the past decade, is set to take place in Otukpo, popularly known as Texas City and the traditional headquarters of Idoma land.
Scheduled from December 23 to 26, 2023, this year’s carnival will once again showcase the vibrant cultural heritage of the Idoma people, while also providing a platform for entertainment, entrepreneurship, and youth empowerment. The event, founded by Chief Edwin Ochai, has consistently brought together a broad spectrum of Nigerian industries, organisations, corporate entities, and prominent figures from the arts and social scenes.
The theme for this year’s carnival is “Olonye K’acheolala,” which translates to “Sweet Things of Our People.” Chief Ochai elaborated on the theme, stating, “It represents our commitment to highlight the joy, unity, and pride of Idoma culture. We aim to showcase the sweetness and richness of our traditions, emphasising the values that have sustained our community for generations.”
A blend of cultural displays and entertainment will mark the diverse lineup of events scheduled throughout the carnival. These include:
- December 23: Arrival and Resignation Christmas Cantata
- December 24: Walk for Peace, Vikers Parade, Idoma Talent Show, LED-Neon Theme Park
- December 25: Carnival Parade with Masquerades and Caribbean Costumes, followed by a Cultural Show featuring live bands, traditional displays, cultural fashion, a local food contest, and a village experience
- December 26: Nigeria Carnival Queen and African Culture Award Ceremony
In addition to being a vibrant celebration of Idoma culture, the carnival has become a key economic driver, with a focus on youth empowerment and entrepreneurship. “The Idoma International Carnival aims to attract our best talents in arts, sports, fashion, academia, and business, providing common ground to build a self-sustaining community,” said Chief Ochai.
When asked about the artists who will be performing, Chief Ochai maintained an air of excitement, saying, “The list of performers will be unveiled soon. Carnival-goers can expect top entertainers from Idoma land and beyond, ensuring an elevated entertainment experience for all.”
As the 2023 Idoma International Carnival draws near, anticipation is building for what promises to be a remarkable celebration of culture, unity, and creativity in the heart of Idoma land.
