Police Speaks On Court Stopping Enforcement Of Tinted-Glass Permit

A Federal High Court sitting in Warri has ordered the Nigeria Police Force and the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to suspend enforcement of the tinted glass permit policy pending the determination of a legal challenge against it.

The interim order was issued in Suit No. FHC/WR/CS/103/2025, filed by legal practitioner John Aikpokpo-Martins. The court directed the police to maintain the status quo and refrain from enforcing the policy until the substantive case is heard.

The suit challenges the legality and constitutionality of the permit requirement, which mandates vehicle owners to obtain police-issued approval for vehicles with tinted windows. The police had earlier resumed enforcement of the policy, with a compliance deadline of October 2, 2025.

Reacting to the development, the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, stated via social media that the police had not yet been officially served the court order. He emphasized that enforcement decisions remain unchanged until proper legal communication is received.

The permit policy, previously suspended in 2021, was reintroduced this year through the Police Specialized Services Automation Project (POSSAP). The Force maintains that the initiative is aimed at curbing criminal activities often associated with the misuse of tinted windows.

However, critics argue that the policy opens the door to harassment and extortion by security personnel. Several legal experts and civil society groups have also questioned the continued reliance on military-era regulations to justify the permit system.

The court’s decision marks a temporary halt to enforcement activities. A date for further hearing has yet to be announced.
