The Edo State Government, through the Office of the First Lady, has pledged unwavering commitment to securing justice for a 12-year-old girl who was allegedly gang-raped by five men in Igiafodo Awuyemi, Okpella, Etsako East Local Government Area, on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2024.
Justice Through the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Law
Edesili Anani, the Administrator of the Office of the First Lady, made this assurance during her visit to the victim, identified as Esther, at the Diasy Ehanire Danjuma Centre. Anani emphasized that the perpetrators would face the full force of the law under the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Law, which provides stringent penalties for such offenses.
She stated:
“The Edo State Government will leave no stone unturned to ensure that these perpetrators are brought to book. Section 4 of the VAPP Law defines rape, while Section 5 outlines the punishment. Edo State has zero tolerance for any form of violence, and we are standing firmly with the victim.”
The Circulated Video Evidence
The attackers reportedly filmed the assault and circulated the video on social media. This act has not only outraged the community but also strengthened the case against the perpetrators. Addressing this, Anani said:
“The video footage makes it impossible for anyone to cover up this crime. The law will take its course, and these individuals will be dealt with decisively.”
Royal and Community Support
The swift response of the Okuokpellagbe of Okpella, His Royal Highness Lukeman Akemokue, and his wife, Blessing, was highlighted during Anani’s visit. The royal couple ensured that Esther and her mother were moved to Benin City for safety and medical care after receiving threats.
Anani commended their efforts, stating:
“I want to commend His Highness and his wife. They acted immediately after seeing the videos, ensuring the victim’s safety and medical care. When things like these happen, speak out for someone else because tomorrow it could be your child.”
Support from the Police and State Government
During a visit to the Edo State Police Headquarters, Anani praised the prompt response of law enforcement agencies and emphasized the importance of securing justice for the victim. She appealed to the police to ensure that the case reaches a decisive conclusion.
The Edo State Commissioner of Police, Umoru Ozigi, assured her of their commitment to justice, confirming that three suspects connected to the crime are already in police custody.
He stated:
“We appreciate your visit and support. We assure you that the victim will get justice. This case is a priority, and the arrested suspects are being interrogated to ensure all perpetrators are brought to book.”
Government and Community Collaboration
Governor Monday Okpebholo and the First Lady’s office have been praised for their proactive response to the case. The Okuokpellagbe of Okpella expressed gratitude, promising continued support for the state administration.
“We will always support the government’s efforts to protect our community. This proactive approach has set a commendable precedent,” he said.
Advocacy Against Silence
Anani used the opportunity to advocate for speaking out against such crimes, urging communities and families to report incidents of violence immediately. She emphasized that collective efforts are necessary to protect vulnerable individuals and ensure that perpetrators are held accountable.
Moving Forward
The Edo State Government’s swift response underscores its commitment to protecting the rights of its citizens and enforcing laws against gender-based violence. As the case progresses, the collaboration between the government, law enforcement, and community leaders serves as a model for tackling violence against vulnerable individuals.
