The family of late Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has concluded an independent autopsy and toxicology test to determine the cause of his death. This development follows the family’s rejection of a previous inconclusive autopsy conducted by the Lagos State Government.

Private Autopsy Results Ready

The Coroner’s Court in Ikorodu, Lagos State, granted the family permission in June 2024 to conduct a private autopsy, citing suspicious circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s death. A family source disclosed to PUNCH Metro that the private autopsy was completed in December 2024, and the results are now with the forensic pathologist contracted by the family.

“The private autopsy has been concluded, and the result is currently with the forensic pathologist. The pathologist is waiting to present it in court,” the source revealed.

Call for Reopening the Inquest

The Critical Thinkers Group, a coalition of concerned citizens, has urged the authorities to reopen the coroner’s inquest into Mohbad’s death. The inquest was suspended in September 2024 following a court order after an NGO seeking to participate in the proceedings was denied by Magistrate Shotibi of the Ikorodu Magistrate Court.

In a statement signed by Bossy Keno, secretary of the group’s U.S. chapter, the group expressed concerns over the suspension of the inquest, stating that the delay is prolonging the search for answers.

“The suspension of the inquest has raised concerns among many, with growing sentiments that the delay is prolonging the search for answers,” the statement read.

Importance of Reopening the Inquest

The group emphasized the need to advance the fact-finding process by reopening the inquest, calling on the Magistrate to set a new date for the proceedings.

Key witnesses, including:

  • Naira Marley
  • Sammy Larry
  • Nurse Feyisayo Ogedengbe
  • The family’s forensic pathologist

are expected to provide critical testimonies that could shed light on the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s death.

Progress Towards Justice

The reopening of the inquest is considered a crucial step in moving the matter to the High Court, ensuring that all relevant evidence is thoroughly examined. Mohbad’s death, shrouded in controversy, has drawn widespread public interest, with calls for justice growing louder.

The family and advocacy groups remain committed to uncovering the truth, urging transparency and accountability in the ongoing legal process.
