IGP Urges Nigerians to Report Police Misconduct Through Official Channels, Not Social Media

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has called on Nigerians to direct complaints about police misconduct to the Police Complaints Response Unit (PCRU) rather than airing grievances on social media. He made this appeal on Monday during the PPROs/Police Communication Experts’ Conference held in Asaba, Delta State.

Egbetokun emphasized that while social media is a powerful tool for communication, it often spreads misinformation and undermines the integrity of the police force. “We appeal to the public not to resort to social media when reporting the conduct of police officers but rather use the Police Complaints Response Unit,” he stated, highlighting that the PCRU offers a more structured and accountable platform for resolving issues.

The IGP acknowledged the critical role of social media in shaping public opinion but warned that unverified information could lead to false perceptions of the police. He stressed the importance of transparency, accountability, and building trust with the public, adding that the police view the media as a vital partner in achieving these goals.

Addressing the attendees, Egbetokun said, “This conference is part of police reform aimed at building trust and respect, which will, in turn, help us gain public trust.”

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State, who inaugurated the conference, praised the IGP’s leadership and shared insights on the complexities of policing in high-pressure states like Delta and Lagos. “Delta and Lagos States are very tough states to police; therefore, any officer who served in Delta or Lagos as CP will police Nigeria well,” the governor said, commending Egbetokun’s capability.

Both leaders emphasized the importance of effective communication between the police and the public. They highlighted the role of Police Public Relations Officers (PPROs) in countering misinformation, improving public perception, and showcasing the positive work being done by the police force.

The conference underscored the ongoing reforms within the Nigerian police, focusing on fostering transparency, accountability, and collaboration with the public to enhance law enforcement’s credibility and effectiveness.
