At least 15 people were reportedly killed in a fresh assault by suspected armed herders on Wednesday evening in Anyiin, Logo Local Government Area of Benue State. The attackers, believed to be Fulani militia, launched the attack around 6:32 p.m., targeting the hometown of former state governor Gabriel Suswam. Community leader Joseph Anawah confirmed the assault, stating that over 20 armed assailants carried out the three-hour operation, leaving many dead, injured, and unaccounted for.
Among the victims were a retired Primary School Supervisor, Orihundu Ati, the son of the Mbawuave Kindred Head, and relatives of former government officials. Anawah noted that the sheer number of attackers overwhelmed the stationed security forces, rendering them unable to contain the violence. He called on the Benue state government to work closely with federal authorities to enhance security in high-risk areas.
Special Adviser to the Governor on Security, Col. Alex Igbaya (retd.), confirmed the incident, noting that military personnel had been deployed to the area. However, the spokesperson for the Benue State police, Catherine Anene, stated that she had not yet received an official report on the attack.
