As renovations get underway, Uyo Township Stadium will feature an Olympic-sized swimming pool.

As construction resumes on the renovated Uyo Township Stadium, Akwa Ibom will have an Olympic-sized swimming pool less than two weeks after the opening of Eket Stadium.

Before the 35,000-seat Godswill Akpabio International Stadium was built, the Uyo Township Stadium was the home field for Akwa United FC, Akwa Starlet FC (now Dakkada FC), Ibom Youths FC, and Ibom Angels FC.

The Olympic-sized swimming pool at the renovated Uyo Township Stadium is one of the new features anticipated at the sports complex, according to the Akwa Ibom State Government.

As he led reporters around the facility, Sir Monday Ebong Uko, the Honorable Commissioner for Youths and Sports in Akwa Ibom State today assured the Governor Udom Emmanuel led administration is committed towards completing the project.

“We do not have an Olympic-sized swimming pool in the entire state,” the Sports Commissioner remarked when asked what motivated the Olympic-size swimming pool project.

Swimming usually brings a lot of medals to sporting events, and Akwa Ibom has never had a venue for athletes to train and compete for these honors.

“I have no doubt that our standing in the national sports festival will improve as soon as this swimming pool is finished,” he said.

When the Uyo Township Stadium renovations are finished, Akwa Ibom State, which is already a popular venue for athletic events in Nigeria, will draw even more competitions.
