President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced a new military cooperation deal with France, aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s capacity to combat terrorism through enhanced equipment and training support.
The President disclosed the development after a high-level discussion with French President Emmanuel Macron, describing the agreement as a key step in Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to tackle rising insecurity.
Fresh Push for Military Strength
Speaking during a meeting with state governors at his Ikoyi residence in Lagos, Tinubu said Nigeria would leverage its diplomatic goodwill and existing credit lines to secure critical military hardware and technical support.
“I can report that following a lengthy discussion with President Macron, France has agreed to collaborate with us on equipment and support,” Tinubu said.
He added that the government is also engaging other international partners to expand access to defence resources and training.
Insecurity Tops Government Agenda
Tinubu identified insecurity as one of the most pressing challenges facing his administration, calling for a unified national response.
“The next phase of our struggle is the challenge of insecurity. We must work collectively to achieve victory,” he told the governors.
He stressed that persistent security threats remain a major obstacle to economic growth, development, and national stability.
UK Visit Also Focused on Defence
The President noted that military equipment acquisition was a central issue during his recent state visit to the United Kingdom, underscoring Nigeria’s renewed focus on strengthening its defence capabilities through global partnerships.
The meeting with governors was attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima and other senior officials.
Economic Concerns Amid Global Tensions
Beyond security, Tinubu also warned of potential economic pressures linked to the ongoing crisis in the Middle East, noting that it could drive inflation and impact Nigerians’ purchasing power.
He said rising global oil prices may increase transportation and food costs, adding that labour groups are expected to respond to the economic strain.
Strategic Outlook
The new partnership with France signals Nigeria’s broader strategy to combine international collaboration with domestic efforts in addressing insecurity.
Analysts say sustained investment in military capacity, alongside regional cooperation, will be crucial in confronting terrorism and restoring stability across the country.
