Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has urged President Bola Tinubu to redirect his attention toward Nigeria’s pressing domestic challenges, criticizing what he described as an overemphasis on foreign travels amid worsening conditions at home.
In a statement shared on Wednesday through his official 𝕏 account, Obi revisited a key campaign pledge made by President Tinubu ahead of the 2023 general election, in which the President assured Nigerians that he should not be re-elected if his administration failed to deliver stable electricity within four years.
The former Anambra State governor expressed concern that events since then have moved in the opposite direction, pointing to repeated collapses of the national electricity grid.
According to him, the frequency of the failures has made the prospect of reliable power supply increasingly doubtful and stands in sharp contrast to the assurances given during the campaign.
Obi noted that the power situation has continued to deteriorate, with the grid reportedly failing multiple times in recent weeks alone. He described this as a troubling development that should command the full attention of the federal government.
Beyond the power crisis, Obi also questioned the timing and value of the President’s continued overseas engagements. He referenced Tinubu’s recent trip to Turkey, drawing comparisons between the two countries’ electricity generation capacities and highlighting what he called Nigeria’s underperformance despite its larger population and resource base.
According to Obi, leadership at this stage should prioritize hands-on problem-solving at home rather than constant travel abroad. He warned that governance risks being sidelined as political calculations for the 2027 elections begin to dominate national discourse.

He concluded by calling on Nigerians to demand accountability and responsible leadership, stressing that the focus should be on improving living conditions and ending the hardship faced by citizens, rather than political maneuvering.
