Abba Kabir Yusuf Dumps NNPP, Returns to APC as Kano Politics Shake Up

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has officially rejoined the All Progressives Congress (APC), putting an end to months of political speculation surrounding his next move.

The governor’s return to the ruling party was formalised on Monday during a high-profile event held at the Coronation Hall of the Kano Government House. He was warmly received by prominent APC figures, including former Kano State Governor and immediate past APC National Chairman, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje; Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin; and the Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Yusuf Abdullahi Ata.

Several senior party officials, federal legislators, and key political stakeholders from across the state were also present at the ceremony.

Addressing attendees, Governor Yusuf explained that his decision to rejoin the APC was motivated by the need to strengthen collaboration with the Federal Government and better position Kano State to benefit from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. According to him, political alignment at both state and federal levels would accelerate development and improve service delivery to the people.

The governor’s defection follows a wave of resignations from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), the platform on which he won the 2023 governorship election. In recent weeks, no fewer than 22 members of the Kano State House of Assembly and eight federal lawmakers have left the NNPP, citing loyalty to Governor Yusuf.

Meanwhile, the political shake-up has also affected the Kano State Executive Council. Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso, son of former Kano State Governor and NNPP national leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has resigned from his position as Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development.

In a statement released on Monday, Mustapha Kwankwaso announced his resignation, describing the decision as a difficult one. He expressed appreciation to Governor Yusuf for the opportunity to serve and thanked the people of Kano State for their support during his tenure.
