El-Rufai Calls for Tinubu’s Impeachment Over Alleged ₦1.5 Trillion Illegal Deductions

El-Rufai Warns Nigerians: Unite or Tinubu May Become President for Life

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has launched a blistering attack on President Bola Tinubu, arguing that the president’s actions warrant impeachment over what he described as unconstitutional handling of public funds.

Speaking during an appearance on Arise Television’s Prime Time, El-Rufai alleged that the federal government has been removing about ₦100 billion every month from the Federation Account without the required legislative approval.

He claimed the deductions have continued for more than 15 months, bringing the total amount involved to roughly ₦1.5 trillion.

According to El-Rufai, the withdrawals violate constitutional provisions because the funds belong not only to the federal government but also to the states. He stressed that any expenditure from the Federation Account must be approved by the National Assembly and, in the case of state allocations, by individual state assemblies as well.

He insisted that the absence of such approvals makes the deductions illegal and, in his view, an impeachable offence.

El-Rufai questioned the purpose of the massive outflows, asking where the ₦1.5 trillion has gone and what it has been used to achieve.

He also expressed frustration over Nigeria’s worsening security situation, wondering why insecurity continues to escalate despite the scale of the alleged spending, and why communities are increasingly being told to fend for themselves.

Reflecting on the current state of affairs, the former governor said he would not have believed, during the 2022–2023 election campaigns, that governance and security could deteriorate to this level, describing the situation as far worse than he ever anticipated.
