Nigerian Afrobeats superstar Wizkid has responded sharply to Seun Kuti following comments rejecting comparisons between the singer and the late Afrobeat pioneer, Fela Anikulapo Kuti.
The dispute began after Seun Kuti publicly pushed back against claims circulating online that Wizkid is “bigger” or “more influential” than his father.
According to Seun, such arguments reduce Fela’s towering legacy to commercial metrics and ignore his enduring role as a cultural revolutionary and political activist.
Seun criticized fans who frequently invoke Fela’s name in debates about contemporary music success, describing the practice as disrespectful and historically uninformed.
He maintained that Fela’s influence cannot be measured by modern charts, streaming numbers, or global tours, but by his impact on African consciousness and political resistance.
While acknowledging Wizkid’s achievements and global recognition, Seun questioned the need to frame the singer’s success as surpassing Fela’s legacy. He also raised an additional issue regarding Wizkid’s use of the moniker “Big Bird,” claiming the nickname had long been associated with him and should not be adopted by others.
Wizkid, however, did not let the remarks slide. Taking to Instagram, the Grammy-winning artiste dismissed the comparisons and defended his standing in today’s music industry.
In a series of posts, he asserted that his accomplishments in the modern era place him ahead in terms of commercial and global success, while hurling insults at Seun.
