The Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) has formally set the date for the next round of local government elections in the state, announcing that the polls will be held on Saturday, January 16, 2027.
According to the commission, elections will take place simultaneously in all polling units across Oyo State’s 33 local government areas. Voting is scheduled to commence at 8:00 a.m. and conclude at 3:00 p.m. on election day.
The decision was reached during OYSIEC’s inaugural management meeting, which took place at its headquarters in Agodi, Ibadan.
The meeting, chaired by the commission’s chairman, Dr. Babatunde Afees Adeniyi, focused on early preparations, strategic planning, and coordination aimed at ensuring a smooth and credible council election.
As part of the election timetable, the commission announced that political campaigns must end by midnight on Friday, January 15, 2027, ahead of the polls. It also disclosed that any supplementary or re-run elections, if required, would be conducted one week later, on Saturday, January 23, 2027.
OYSIEC further clarified that the tenure of the current chairmen and councillors across the state’s 33 local councils is expected to expire on May 23, 2027, in accordance with the provisions of the existing local government law in Oyo State.

The commission noted that the early announcement of the election date was made in line with the authority vested in it by relevant sections of the Electoral Act and the Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission Law, which empower it to issue advance notice for elections.
OYSIEC urged political parties, aspirants, security agencies, civil society groups, and other key stakeholders to cooperate fully with the commission to ensure a peaceful, transparent, and successful conduct of the local government elections slated for January 2027.
