Popular Nigerian comedian and Nollywood actor, Ayo Makun, widely known as AY, has criticised the government following a tragic road accident involving British-Nigerian boxing star, Anthony Joshua.
According to reports, the former heavyweight champion was on Monday involved in a crash along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, around the Makun axis of Ogun State. Joshua was said to be travelling in a Lexus SUV when the vehicle rammed into a parked truck. While the boxer reportedly escaped with minor injuries, the accident claimed the lives of two people.
Reacting to the incident, AY took to his Instagram page to express deep sorrow and frustration, describing the tragedy as a clear reflection of systemic failures in Nigeria. He blamed poor road infrastructure, weak safety measures, and ineffective leadership for the recurring loss of lives on the nation’s highways.
AY lamented that it was heartbreaking for a global sports icon who has represented Nigeria with pride to return home only to experience such a devastating incident. He stressed that the deaths were not a matter of destiny, but the result of preventable failures.
He further questioned how long Nigerians would continue to lose lives due to unsafe roads and poor enforcement of safety standards, calling for urgent reforms. According to him, the situation highlights the absence of accountability and the government’s failure to prioritise human life.
The entertainer urged authorities to invest in safer road networks, stronger traffic enforcement, and efficient emergency response systems, emphasising that citizens deserve protection, not negligence.
