Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has shared a personal experience from his time in office to illustrate what he described as his hands-on leadership style and approach to problem-solving.
Speaking on Monday during an interactive Space session on 𝕏 with his supporters, known as the Obidients, Obi recalled an incident that took place several years ago on a British Airways flight while he was still a serving governor.
According to him, a female passenger had attempted to use the aircraft’s restroom but walked away after finding it in an unpleasant condition. Rather than ignore the situation or wait for the cabin crew, Obi said he chose to clean the toilet himself.
He explained that the move later caught the attention of a flight attendant, who was surprised to find the restroom spotless when she returned. Although she did not confront him directly, Obi said the staff member later shared the incident with others, including a government minister.
Recalling her reaction, Obi said she expressed disbelief that a sitting governor would take such an action.
Explaining his motivation, Obi said his decision was based on simple reasoning. He noted that since he might need to use the restroom later, it made sense to ensure it was clean.
The former governor used the story to stress the importance of personal responsibility, urging Nigerians to take initiative when they encounter problems instead of turning a blind eye. He also criticized what he described as a culture of pretence, adding that he does not keep domestic staff in his home.
