Ebonyi APC Fixes January 25, 2026, for Local Government Primaries

Rising Opposition Defections

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ebonyi State has announced January 25, 2026, as the date for its primary elections to choose candidates for the forthcoming local government chairmanship and councillorship polls.

The party’s State Chairman, Chief Stanley Okoro Emegha, made the disclosure on Monday in Abakaliki while briefing journalists after a meeting of the State Executive Council. He said the party had begun arrangements to guarantee a credible and hitch-free primary process, with preliminary activities expected to kick off earlier in January.

According to Emegha, both the councillorship and chairmanship primaries will be conducted on the same day, stressing that the party is determined to uphold transparency and fairness throughout the exercise.

He also issued a stern warning to political appointees serving under the administration of Governor Francis Nwifuru who may be nursing political ambitions. Emegha stated that such individuals must resign their appointments at least 30 days before the primaries.

“Any appointee who wants to contest must submit a resignation letter on or before December 20, 2025. Failure to do so automatically disqualifies the person from participating in the primaries,” he said.

The APC chairman further revealed plans for a statewide membership revalidation exercise, noting that the process would commence once the party receives its official registration code. He assured party members and the public that openness and accountability would remain central to all internal party activities.

Beyond party administration, Emegha announced the commencement of construction work on a new APC state secretariat in Ebonyi. He disclosed that the project, which is already underway, is expected to be completed within six months.

Describing the new complex as a landmark project, Emegha said it would surpass the party’s national secretariat in Abuja in terms of size and facilities. According to him, the development reflects the APC’s determination to consolidate and sustain its political dominance in the state.

Assessing the political landscape, Emegha claimed that the APC currently controls all elective and appointive positions in Ebonyi across the federal, state and local government levels. He listed all 171 ward councillors, 13 local government chairmen, 24 members of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly, six members of the House of Representatives and the state’s three senators as APC members.

He described Ebonyi as the strongest APC state in the South-East zone, citing the party’s sweeping control of political offices.

In a further boost to the party, Emegha announced the defection of the last remaining opposition federal lawmaker from the state, Hon. Iduma Igariwey, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC. Igariwey represents Afikpo and Edda Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.

According to Emegha, the lawmaker has completed his registration in his ward, adding that documentary evidence of his membership is already on record.
