Peter Okoye: Why Poverty Scares Me More Than Death

Award-winning Nigerian singer Peter Okoye, famously known as Mr P of PSquare, has revealed a deep and personal fear that has shaped his drive and success—the fear of poverty.

Speaking during a candid chat on a recent episode of The Nancy Isime Show, Mr P disclosed that while many people fear death, his greatest fear is ever returning to the hardship he experienced growing up.

The music star recounted a haunting childhood memory when his family home—already a cramped, single-room boys’ quarters—was demolished right before their eyes after the landlord sold the property.

According to him, he, his parents, and his seven siblings—six boys and two girls—were all squeezed into a tiny one-room space, separated only by a curtain. With nowhere else to go, the family pleaded for more time to relocate. Instead, they were met with the rumbling sound of a bulldozer tearing down the building while they were still inside.

“I’ve tasted poverty. I’ve lived inside it,” Mr P said. “Death doesn’t scare me. What scares me is being broke again. Poverty is the only thing I fear.”

The singer emphasized that the memory of losing their home and watching everything crumble around them has stayed with him and fuels his determination to keep pushing, hustling, and growing, no matter the challenges life throws his way.

For Mr P, success isn’t just a career milestone—it’s a shield against the suffering he once knew too well.
