Fresh details have emerged surrounding the recent attempt to impeach Senate President Godswill Akpabio, revealing that the move was not an organised rebellion but a loose coalition of dissatisfied lawmakers drawn from both the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the opposition parties.
According to reliable sources, the lawmakers behind the plot were primarily motivated by grievances over committee appointments, limited consultations, and perceived centralization of power within Akpabio’s leadership circle.
Kalu Confirms Impeachment Attempt, Says Senate Remains United
Speaking with journalists at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on the South East Development Commission (SEDC), confirmed that an impeachment attempt was indeed made but was quickly foiled.
Kalu, a former governor of Abia State, credited the intervention of pro-stability lawmakers for averting what could have plunged the upper chamber into crisis.
“Though there were attempts, we didn’t allow that to happen. That is why I always say we are one big family, and it is not going to happen. The Senate is united behind its leadership,” Kalu said.
He emphasized that the 0th Senate remains committed to its constitutional duties of lawmaking, oversight, and national development, while supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s efforts to tackle Nigeria’s economic challenges.
“Whatever the problem is, the Senate is more interested in making laws that will help President Tinubu overcome the economic difficulties our people are going through,” he added. “Our legislations are pro-people, and our goal is to ensure Nigerians can eat three times a day.”
Lawmakers Cite Marginalization, Lack of Consultation
According to sources quoted by Daily Trust, some senators reportedly felt marginalized in committee assignments and accused Akpabio of concentrating influence among a small circle of loyalists.
Others complained about inadequate consultation on critical issues such as budget appropriation, national security briefings, and policy discussions that directly affect their constituencies.

Despite these tensions, senior members of the Senate have reaffirmed their loyalty to Akpabio, insisting that leadership changes are not on the table.
Political observers note that the alleged plot reflects deeper power dynamics within the Senate and the ongoing struggle to balance influence among political blocs within the 10th National Assembly.
