A violent confrontation reportedly broke out on Sunday, November 9, 2025, along the busy Onitsha Road in Anambra State, after a group of Nigerian Army personnel allegedly opened fire on police officers who were returning from election duty.
Eyewitness accounts suggest the incident occurred at a military checkpoint, where an argument between members of the two security agencies spiraled out of control. What began as a routine stop reportedly turned violent when soldiers allegedly shot at the police team.
According to one of the affected officers who spoke to SaharaReporters, the situation escalated without warning.
“We were on our way back from election duty when we had a misunderstanding with some Army personnel at their checkpoint. Before we knew what was happening, they opened fire on us,” the officer recounted.
He added that one of his colleagues was hit directly in the chest, while several others sustained gunshot injuries.
“One of us was shot in the chest, and many others were injured. The situation has turned chaotic, and we’ve called for reinforcement,” he said.
The clash reportedly triggered panic in the area, with residents and motorists scampering for safety as gunfire rang out.
Tensions remain high, as security authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
The shooting took place barely hours after the conclusion of the November 8, 2025, Anambra governorship election, which witnessed a massive security presence.
