Waje Explains Why She Won’t Marry an Unsuccessful Man

Nigerian singer Waje has opened up about her relationship expectations, revealing that marriage for her isn’t simply about love—it’s about compatibility, mutual ambition and respect.

According to the award‐winning vocalist, one non‐negotiable criterion is that her partner must be actively successful in his own right.

In a recent interview, Waje emphasised that she is not inclined to marry someone who is not successful—not because riches alone matter, but because shared drive and vision do.

She explained that her partner must be someone she can look up to, someone whose career path she respects, and who will allow her to flourish rather than restrict her.

“I want someone that inspires me… somebody that would motivate me, somebody who has had some success in his own career path,” Waje said, adding that while he “doesn’t have to be very rich,” he must be successful “in his own way”.

In previous conversations, Waje has also underlined other qualities she deems crucial: a God-fearing nature, a man unafraid to be expressive, and one willing to support her public work rather than seeing it as a threat.

Waje’s candidness taps into a wider evolving conversation in Nigeria around marriage, success and self‐worth.

In a cultural climate where many still view marriage as the endpoint of success, the singer flips the script—declaring that she brings success and expects a partner who meets her on that level.

Her remarks also speak to modern single professionals, especially women, who seek more than just companionship—they seek partnership, growth and alignment of ambition.

What remains to be seen is how these standards will translate when the right person comes along—and how those expectations will balance with the unpredictable, and sometimes messy, realities of love and relationships.
