The Anambra State Police Command has assured residents of its commitment to neutrality and professionalism in the forthcoming governorship election scheduled for November 8.
Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, gave the assurance on Friday while addressing journalists in Awka. He said the command would remain apolitical and focused on ensuring a peaceful, credible, and transparent election.
“The Nigeria Police Force has no interest in who wins or loses. Our duty is to protect the process, the voters, and election materials to guarantee free and fair polls,” Orutugu stated.
The Commissioner disclosed that the command had concluded comprehensive security arrangements, including the deployment of additional personnel, tactical units, and modern surveillance equipment across all 21 local government areas of the state.
He added that the police would work closely with other security agencies, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and community leaders to prevent violence or voter intimidation during the exercise.
According to Orutugu, officers have been warned against any form of misconduct or political bias. He also urged political parties, candidates, and their supporters to conduct themselves peacefully and respect the rules of engagement.
“We expect all stakeholders to act responsibly. The police will not tolerate thuggery, vote-buying, or any attempt to disrupt the election,” he said.
Reports indicate that about 45,000 police officers from various state commands and special units will be deployed to Anambra to ensure adequate coverage of polling units, collation centres, and sensitive locations.
Drone surveillance, rapid response teams, and situation rooms have also been activated to monitor developments before, during, and after the election.
