Evangelist Uma Ukpai Dies at 80 – Family Confirms Passing

Prominent Nigerian evangelist and founder of the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association (UUEA), Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai, has died at the age of 80.

A statement from the family, released on his official social media page, confirmed his passing occurred on Sunday, October 6, 2025.

“With hearts full of gratitude, we celebrate the triumphant homegoing of Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, teacher of the Word, crusader, and intercessor,” the statement read.

The family described him as a “faithful soldier of the Cross” who dedicated over six decades to Christian ministry, marked by evangelism, biblical teaching, and humanitarian outreach. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in the coming days.

Ministry and Legacy

Born on January 7, 1945, in Asaga, Ohafia, Abia State, Ukpai founded the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association, headquartered in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. The ministry became known for its interdenominational outreaches and large-scale crusades across Nigeria and abroad.

His humanitarian efforts included the Uma Ukpai Eye Centre in Abia State, which has provided thousands of free cataract surgeries, and the King of Kings Specialist Hospital among other medical and social initiatives.

He also established theological and leadership training institutions for pastors and evangelists.

Earlier this year, the renowned preacher marked his 80th birthday with a series of thanksgiving events and charitable outreaches, including a major upgrade to his eye care facility to extend advanced surgical services to underserved areas.

Among them, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), described Ukpai as a man of “unshakable faith” and a mentor who inspired many in ministry.

Speaking at a recent church service, Adeboye recounted how Ukpai’s resilience following personal losses strengthened his own faith during a time of grief.

“I drew strength from how he continued to serve God faithfully after losing children and grandchildren. He was a reference point,” Adeboye said.

Ukpai is survived by his wife, Dr. (Mrs.) Philomena Uma Ukpai, and their children.
