Aregbesola Proposes Political Parties Nominate INEC Leaders

Rauf Aregbesola, National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has proposed that political parties with at least five members in the National Assembly should have the authority to nominate individuals to lead the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Speaking during a panel discussion on “Innovation in Electoral Technology 2015–2025” in Abuja, Aregbesola emphasized the need for reforms to enhance public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral processes.

He argued that the current system, where the ruling party often influences INEC appointments, undermines the commission’s perceived impartiality.

Aregbesola stated, “Let parties with at least five members in the National Assembly nominate people that will be at the helm of affairs in INEC on equal basis.”

He contended that such a change would ensure a more balanced and transparent electoral management body.

The ADC leader also criticized the existing appointment process, suggesting that it allows the ruling party to exert undue influence over INEC’s operations, potentially compromising the integrity of elections.
