The Federal Government has declared Friday, October 1, 2025, a public holiday to commemorate Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary.
This announcement was made on Monday in a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Aishetu Gogo Ndayako, on behalf of the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
The Minister congratulated Nigerians on the milestone and called for renewed patriotism, unity, and national commitment as the country continues its democratic journey.
“As we mark our 65th year of independence, it is a time to reflect on the sacrifices of our founding fathers and the journey we have collectively made as a nation,” the statement read.
Government Calls for National Unity
The Ministry emphasized the importance of peaceful coexistence and mutual respect among citizens, noting that Nigeria’s diversity should be viewed as a strength rather than a barrier.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo urged Nigerians to remain committed to the ideals of democracy, good governance, and the rule of law, stating that only through collective effort can the nation achieve lasting progress and development.
Independence Day Activities
While the Federal Government has yet to release an official program of events for the anniversary, Independence Day celebrations typically include:
* Presidential broadcast to the nation
* Military and civilian parades in Abuja
* Flag-hoisting ceremonies across states
* Cultural exhibitions and community events
Security agencies have been placed on alert to ensure a peaceful and hitch-free celebration nationwide.
Nigeria gained independence from British colonial rule on October 1, 1960.
