Sanwo-Olu Flags Off Medical Bikes for Faster Emergency Response in Lagos

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Tuesday unveiled a fleet of ambulance motorcycles designed to tackle the state’s notorious traffic gridlock and save lives during medical emergencies.

The launch, held in Lagos, featured demonstrations of the bikes equipped with emergency medical kits and communication gadgets. The initiative is part of the Lagos State Government’s broader reforms in healthcare and emergency response.

Sanwo-Olu noted that traffic congestion often causes delays for conventional ambulances, leading to avoidable fatalities. With the new two-wheeled ambulance system, paramedics can now navigate narrow roads and bypass traffic to provide critical first aid before patients are moved to hospitals.

“Every second matters in saving lives. These ambulance bikes will allow our trained emergency responders to get to patients faster, stabilize them, and coordinate with hospitals while a standard ambulance makes its way through traffic,” the governor said.

The governor also disclosed that the motorcycles would be strategically deployed in high-traffic corridors, major highways, and densely populated areas of the state.

Health Commissioner Prof. Akin Abayomi described the initiative as a “game-changer,” adding that the bikes are stocked with essential life-saving equipment, including defibrillators, oxygen packs, and trauma kits.

Residents at the launch applauded the initiative, saying it would help reduce preventable deaths from accidents, heart attacks, and other emergencies.

Sanwo-Olu urged Lagosians to support the scheme by giving right of way to emergency responders and avoiding practices that endanger road safety.

The initiative is the latest in a series of health sector reforms by the Lagos State Government, which has previously invested in new ambulances, hospital upgrades, and expanded health insurance coverage.
