The United States Government has restated that visa application fees paid by Nigerians remain non-refundable, regardless of whether an application is approved or denied.
In a post on its official X handle on Monday, the U.S. Mission in Nigeria explained that the fees are used to cover administrative costs involved in processing applications and do not guarantee visa issuance.
“Visa application fees are non-refundable and non-transferable, regardless of the outcome of your application,” the Mission stated.
The clarification, issued under the awareness campaign #VisaWiseTravelSmart, comes amid growing complaints from applicants who face multiple re-applications and rising costs.
According to the Embassy, the policy applies across all non-immigrant visa categories, including tourist, business, student, exchange, and work visas.

The Mission advised applicants to ensure accuracy in their submissions and to make use of the official website for detailed guidelines before scheduling interviews.
Non-immigrant visa fees for categories such as tourism and business currently stand at $185 (about ₦280,000).
The Embassy stressed that while applicants are entitled to a fair review process, the fee is strictly for processing and cannot be refunded if the application is unsuccessful.
