Tragedy struck on Friday night when a three-storey building under construction collapsed at No. 333 Borno Way, Alagomeji area of Yaba, Lagos State, leaving several workers trapped.
The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m., prompting a swift response from emergency agencies including the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and other first responders.
According to officials, at least four adult males were rescued alive from the rubble and rushed to nearby hospitals for medical attention. Rescue operations continued through the night into Saturday morning, as authorities combed through the debris to locate more survivors.
The official statement titled ‘Workers Rescued From Ebute-Meta Building Collapse (Video)’ read: “The building collapse at 333 Borno Way, Alagomeji, Ebute Metta, Lagos, has all relevant emergency responders, including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, at the scene with three male adult victims already rescued alive,. In contrast, search and rescue continue for the remaining two construction workers still trapped.
“The four-storey building under construction gave way at about 19:46 hours on Friday, as reported before the intervention of first responders.
“Further updates will be communicated as the situation unfolds.”
In another update on the collapse, Olajide said: “All eight trapped victims (all adult male construction workers) have been rescued alive as search and rescue reached ground zero, while the evacuation of rubble continues.”
While the number of persons still trapped inside the collapsed building has not yet been ascertained, emergency officials assured that efforts would not cease until the site was fully cleared.

The immediate cause of the collapse remains unknown, but safety agencies have since cordoned off the area to forestall further tragedy as investigations commence.
The collapse has once again raised concerns about building standards and enforcement of safety regulations in Lagos, a city that has witnessed frequent cases of structural failures in recent years.
