Veteran Nollywood actor Chiwetalu Agu has strongly denied online reports claiming that he is dead, describing them as “false, misleading and driven by a desire for likes, views and clicks.”
In a video posted on his official Instagram page on Friday, September 12, 2025, Agu said he is alive, healthy, and surprised that people would believe such a rumor without verification.
The actor, famous for his roles in indigenous Nollywood films and known for his sharp proverbs and character roles, expressed disappointment at how easily misinformation spreads.
Agu emphasised that no amount of rumors will diminish his presence both onscreen and off.
He said: “All because of likes, views, and comments, a blogger wrongly announced my death. They posted ‘RIP’ with my pictures. Let me shock you: Chief Chiwetalu Agu Okenmirin’ezoru1 of Etiti Amokwe, Enugu State, is not going to die any time soon.
“Instead, I will be the one to bury my enemies. The one who digs a pit will fall inside; the one who digs a grave will fall inside. I am going to carry my grandchildren.”
The Birth Of The Rumour
The rumours began with a post on a Facebook page which claimed that Agu had died after battling diabetes and undergoing spinal surgery.
This post quickly went viral, attracting tens of thousands of likes, shares, and comments.
Reacting, Agu released a video in which he addressed fans and family directly, saying: “Chief Chiwetalu Agu, Okenmiri n’ezoru Oha 1 of Etiti Amokwe, Enugu State is not going to die any time soon.” He also said he plans to “bury my enemies” instead—using the idiom to suggest that those spreading false information will face consequences.
He questioned why people quickly believe sensational claims without confirming facts, noting that misinformation posted by bloggers often circulates unchecked.
Regarding legal recourse, Agu said he would have pursued defamation action if a major blogger had published the false news. However, because the blogger responsible is “still struggling with likes,” he decided against legal action.
