Hamilton Secures Thrilling Victory at Portuguese Grand Prix
The Portuguese Grand Prix saw Lewis Hamilton claim his second win of the 2021 season, solidifying his lead in the drivers’ championship. The seven-time champion expertly managed the race, overtaking Max Verstappen and Valtteri Bottas to secure his 97th Formula 1 victory.
A Challenging Start
Hamilton started second on the grid but faced an early setback when he dropped to third behind Verstappen after a Safety Car restart on Lap 7. The restart was prompted by a collision between Alfa Romeo teammates Kimi Raikkonen and Antonio Giovinazzi, which left Raikkonen out of the race. Hamilton’s loss of position was temporary, however, as he regained his composure and began to chase down the leaders.
A Masterclass in Overtaking
Hamilton’s determination paid off on Lap 11 when he expertly passed Verstappen, using his DRS to reclaim second place. He then set his sights on teammate Bottas, who had maintained the lead from the start. On Lap 20, Hamilton seized his opportunity, sweeping past Bottas into Turn 1 to take the lead. This decisive move ultimately secured his victory.
Verstappen and Bottas Battle for Second
Verstappen finished second, maintaining his impressive record of finishing in either first or second place in all three 2021 races so far. Bottas secured third, despite suffering a sensor issue on his power unit that hindered his performance. The Finn’s struggles allowed Verstappen to close the gap, but he was unable to overtake.
Notable Performances
Sergio Perez achieved his best result as a Red Bull driver with a fourth-place finish, demonstrating his growing familiarity with the team. Lando Norris continued his impressive form, finishing fifth and leading the midfield pack. Fernando Alonso delivered a strong performance, passing Daniel Ricciardo and Carlos Sainz to secure eighth place and showcasing his enduring talent.
Hamilton’s victory extends his lead over Verstappen to eight points in the drivers’ championship. Mercedes also stretches its lead over Red Bull to 18 points in the constructors’ standings. As the season unfolds, the rivalry between these two teams is intensifying.
