Stanley Nwabali Injury Threatens Nigeria’s World Cup Qualifying Ambitions

Nigeria’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers suffered a setback after goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali sustained an injury during Chippa United’s league encounter with Richards Bay.

The 29-year-old, who has become a dependable figure for the Super Eagles, was forced off in the first half, leaving fans and coaching staff anxious about his availability for next month’s qualifiers.

His injury comes at a time of mounting challenges for Nigeria’s goalkeeping department. Maduka Okoye remains suspended for two months over an illegal betting case, forcing the national team to consider less experienced players.

Among the backup options are Amas Obasogie, yet to make his debut for Nigeria, and Adebayo Adeleye, with just a single cap to his name at Volos NPS in Greece. Meanwhile, teenage sensation Ebenezer Harcourt, aged 15, has been called up after impressing in youth tournaments, though expectations are that he will be eased into the squad rather than thrown directly into top-tier qualifiers.

At present, Nigeria is fourth in its qualifying group, holding seven points and trailing South Africa by six. Losing Nwabali, who has kept goal in 21 international appearances, could prove costly as the team faces must-win games.

Frontpagenews.ng reports that the Nigerian Football Federation has not ruled out calling up emergency reinforcements as the qualifiers approach.
