The political atmosphere in Benue State has shifted as Honourable Alfred Emberga officially emerged the new Speaker of the State House of Assembly on Sunday.
The election came shortly after the abrupt resignation of Honourable Aondona Dajoh, who stepped aside from his position, paving the way for new leadership.
Dramatic Recall of Suspended Members
Interestingly, Emberga was among four lawmakers who had been suspended last week for allegedly masterminding attempts to unseat the former Speaker. However, during an emergency plenary session presided over by Deputy Speaker Honourable Lami Danaldi-Ogenyi, a motion moved by Majority Leader Honourable Saater Tiseer and seconded by Honourable Samuel Jiji of Logo Constituency led to the recall of the affected members.
“This house has resolved to lift the suspension of the four members,” the deputy speaker affirmed. The recalled lawmakers were immediately ushered back into the chamber.
Legislative Procedure and Election Outcome
Following the lifting of the suspension, Honourable Douglas Akyaa of Makurdi South nominated Emberga for the role of Speaker, with Honourable Abu Umoru of Apa seconding the motion. With no opposition candidate, Emberga was confirmed unopposed.
The Clerk of the House, John Hwande, administered the oath of office, officially sealing Emberga’s assumption of duty.
Emberga’s Vision as Speaker
In his first address, the new Speaker expressed gratitude to his colleagues and lauded the service of the outgoing leader. He assured members and citizens of a transparent and fair leadership approach.
“This house under my watch will work harmoniously with the executive and judiciary while maintaining our independence in line with the principle of separation of powers,” Emberga stated.
Frontpagenews.ng reports that Emberga’s emergence signals a fresh legislative era, with expectations running high among citizens and political observers in Benue State.
