Lagos app-based drivers, under the Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON), have strongly opposed Bolt’s recent 50% fare reduction, arguing that it worsens their already difficult financial conditions.

Union Plans Protest Over Pay Cuts

In response to the drastic fare reduction, AUATON has planned a protest to demand fairer compensation and improved working conditions in the ride-hailing industry. The union members have expressed concerns about the severe impact of dwindling earnings on their ability to sustain their livelihoods.

Steven Iwindoye, the union’s spokesperson in Lagos State, issued a press release on Sunday, emphasizing that continuous price reductions and unfair treatment of drivers by ride-hailing companies—such as Bolt, Uber, Indrive, and Rida—have reached a breaking point. He stressed that drivers must unite and take decisive action to address these challenges.

Call for Solidarity Among Drivers

According to the statement, “We call on all drivers, regardless of union affiliation, to participate in the upcoming protest. We cannot afford to have drivers undermining the effort by continuing to work and accept the unfair conditions. The protest’s success relies on the unity and solidarity of all drivers.”

Iwindoye also pointed out that some drivers have been hesitant to take a stand or have actively worked against the collective interest. “Unfortunately, drivers themselves have been a significant obstacle to progress in the industry. Some have been unwilling to join the movement, which weakens the cause,” he said.

Steps Towards Change

While awaiting the official protest date, AUATON encourages drivers to take preliminary action by formally expressing their dissatisfaction with Bolt’s fare reduction. Writing complaints and registering their discontent with the company is seen as a crucial step to building momentum for the demonstration.

“When the protest date is announced, we must stand together and use our collective power to bring about change. This may require drivers to take bold action and assert their rights. By doing so, we can create a better future for ourselves and the entire ride-hailing industry,” Iwindoye stated.

Union’s Final Call for Fair Treatment

AUATON urges all members and drivers to unite and demand fair compensation from ride-hailing companies. The union believes that with collective action, drivers can push for better wages and improved working conditions that will benefit all app-based transporters in Nigeria.

The protest is expected to send a strong message to ride-hailing companies, advocating for a sustainable pricing model that considers drivers’ operational costs and well-being.
