As Kanye West prepares to release his highly anticipated gospel album Jesus Is King, some members of the Christian community are expressing skepticism about the rapper’s newfound faith. The controversy reignited following West’s “Sunday Service” performances, with critics questioning the sincerity of his born-again status.
According to a report by the New York Post, the backlash has been brewing since West began incorporating religious imagery into his work in the early 2000s. Charlene Kaleina, a 68-year-old Christian from Connecticut, voiced her concerns, stating that while West may be seeking to understand Jesus, many Christians feel something is off about his approach. “People who follow Christ sense something is not right with this scene,” she told the Post.
On social media, hundreds have joined the debate, with many criticizing the album’s title as blasphemous and questioning West’s character based on his past behavior. One Twitter user commented, “The way he talks about women in his other albums makes me skeptical he knows the gospel.”
Adding to the criticism, Premier Christianity columnist Tobi Oredein highlighted the exclusivity of West’s invite-only “Sunday Service,” suggesting it clashes with the inclusive nature of Christianity.
The Post reached out to West’s representatives for a response, but as of yet, no comment has been made.
