Former President Goodluck Jonathan has received the prestigious Founder’s Sunhak Peace Prize at an official ceremony in Seoul, South Korea. He announced the news on Friday through his official X (formerly Twitter) account, calling the recognition a tribute to Nigerians and Africans committed to advancing peace and development.

Jonathan emphasized that the award represents far more than a personal achievement. He described it as a powerful acknowledgment of the collective efforts by millions across the continent who continue to work for unity, justice, and prosperity.

Jonathan Celebrates Africans Advancing Peace

In his public statement, Jonathan expressed deep gratitude for the award and stressed that the honor belongs to all Nigerians and Africans who believe in peace and work daily to secure it. He credited the continent’s growing commitment to peaceful coexistence, democratic values, and regional stability as the true foundation for the recognition.

I’m truly grateful for receiving the Founder’s Sunhak Peace Prize today during the official ceremony in Seoul,” Jonathan wrote. “This honor is not just for me—it belongs to every Nigerian who believes peace is possible and to every African working toward the progress of our continent.”

Acknowledging Supporters and Global Partners

Jonathan also extended heartfelt congratulations to other recipients of the 2024 prize. Additionally, he thanked those who made the recognition possible, especially the leadership of the Universal Peace Federation and the Sunhak Peace Prize Foundation.

He expressed special appreciation to Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon, the co-founder of the Universal Peace Federation and founder of the Sunhak Peace Prize. Jonathan also used the moment to publicly thank his wife, Dame Patience Jonathan, for her unwavering support.

“I congratulate the other awardees and thank Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon, the Sunhak Peace Prize Foundation, and my wife, Dame Patience Jonathan, for her constant love and support,” he added.

What the Sunhak Peace Prize Represents

The Sunhak Peace Prize, launched in 2013 by Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon, honors individuals and institutions making impactful contributions to peace, sustainable development, and global well-being. The award seeks to highlight actions that break down barriers, heal divisions, and create paths toward a more harmonious global society.

By honoring changemakers who address global challenges such as conflict, poverty, and inequality, the prize fosters a culture of service, dialogue, and cooperation. Past winners include world leaders, humanitarians, environmental advocates, and innovators who have left lasting legacies in their fields.

Jonathan’s Peacebuilding Record After Office

Since leaving office in 2015, Jonathan has embraced a leadership role in peacebuilding and conflict mediation across Africa. His peaceful concession after Nigeria’s 2015 presidential election earned him international praise and cemented his status as a champion of democratic values.

In the years that followed, he took on high-level roles in election observation missions and regional peace efforts. Through the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation and partnerships with global organizations, he continues to promote democratic stability, credible elections, and peaceful transitions of power.

His work across West Africa, including missions to Mali, The Gambia, and Sierra Leone, has consistently reinforced the need for dialogue, national reconciliation, and inclusive governance.

A Symbol of Global Respect for African Peace Advocates

Jonathan’s receipt of the Sunhak Peace Prize signals global respect for African leadership in peace efforts. By recognizing a former head of state who stepped away from power peacefully and remained dedicated to service, the award reinforces the critical role of principled leadership in securing lasting peace.

As he continues to speak globally and support democratic institutions, Jonathan’s message remains clear: Africa has the capacity to lead the world in building peace, and its people deserve global recognition for the progress they are making.
