Nigeria, alongside 150 countries and international organizations, has signed onto China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), securing access to benefits exceeding $100 billion. The BRI, a global development strategy, aims to strengthen infrastructure, trade, and investment ties between China, Africa, and other participating nations.
At a press briefing on “The Belt and Road for International Cooperation” held at the Chinese Embassy in Lagos, Mr. Guan Zhongqi, Acting Consul General of China in Lagos, highlighted the vast opportunities presented by the BRI. He emphasized the initiative’s focus on clean cooperation, green development, and transparent processes. “The BRI is not an exclusive club. It aims to promote green development through projects that protect the earth,” Guan stated.
Guan praised Nigeria as a strategic partner with China, citing the countries’ shared cultural and historical similarities, as well as complementary economies. He stressed that the collaboration under the BRI would significantly contribute to Nigeria’s social and economic development, positioning it as a key player in the global economy.
Commercial Consul Mr. Liu Junsheng echoed these sentiments, noting that the BRI’s joint pursuit would bring tangible benefits to participating nations, fostering global partnerships and enhancing connectivity. “We need to promote a global partnership of connectivity to achieve common development and prosperity,” Liu remarked, expressing confidence in the win-win outcomes of this partnership.
This growing cooperation between Nigeria and China under the BRI is expected to enhance infrastructure development, strengthen trade links, and create a path towards shared prosperity for both nations.
