William Troost-Ekong Honoured with MFR by President Tinubu

Retired Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has officially received his Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) certificate from President Bola Tinubu, following the recent national honours awarded to members of Nigeria’s senior men’s football team.

Troost-Ekong shared the milestone on his verified 𝕏 account on Tuesday, describing it as a deeply emotional moment for both himself and his family.

“I am truly honoured and thankful to His Excellency, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (@officialABAT), for awarding me the MFR national honour,” he wrote. “Receiving the official certificate today, after the announcement last night, is a proud moment for me and my loved ones. This recognition means more than just a personal achievement.”

The 32-year-old defender has been a standout performer for Nigeria over the years and led the team during their remarkable journey to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Reflecting on his national team career, Troost-Ekong emphasized the profound role Nigeria has played in shaping his identity and purpose.

“Nigeria gave me my identity, my purpose, and the opportunity to pursue my dream through football,” he said. “Wearing the green and white has always been a privilege, a responsibility, and a promise to give my all for the badge and our people.”

Looking ahead, the former captain expressed his continued support for the Super Eagles as they embark on their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations campaign in Morocco.

“As our Super Eagles begin their AFCON journey today, I wish the team great success,” he said. “I will be supporting them every step of the way. I believe in this team, our nation, and what we can achieve together.”

President Tinubu’s certificate, shared by Troost-Ekong, formally acknowledges his contributions to Nigeria’s national pride and service. It states:

“In exercise of the powers vested in me under section 1(4) of the National Honours Act, I, BOLA AHMED TINUBU, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, in recognition of your outstanding virtues and in appreciation of your services to our country, Nigeria, HEREBY award to you to have, and enjoy title, dignity and all the privileges of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR).”
