Wike's Reaction as Tinubu Ends Emergency Rule in Rivers, Reinstates Fubara

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has welcomed President Bola Tinubu’s decision to lift the six-month emergency rule in Rivers State and reinstate Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

In a statement issued shortly after the announcement, Wike praised the restoration of democratic governance, saying the move signifies respect for the people’s mandate.

The emergency rule had been declared on March 18, 2025, citing breakdowns in governance between the executive and the legislature in Rivers State, including disputes over budget presentation and alleged vandalism of critical state infrastructure.

With the emergency slated to end at midnight on September 17, 2025, Governor Fubara, the Deputy Governor, and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly are set to resume their duties starting September 18.

Wike’s reaction comes amid mixed responses from political actors and civil society. While some hail the lifting of the emergency as overdue, others remain cautious, calling for accountability for what transpired during the emergency period.
