Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has announced a ₦50 million reward for the Super Falcons ahead of their crucial 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifier return leg against the Benin Republic, scheduled to hold at the MKO Abiola International Stadium, Abeokuta.
Governor Abiodun made the announcement when he hosted the nine-time African champions at the Government House in Abeokuta on Monday evening. He commended the players for their consistent excellence on the continent and described the gesture as both a “token of appreciation and motivation” ahead of Tuesday’s decisive encounter.
“You have brought pride to Nigeria and inspired millions of young girls across the country. This gesture is our way of saying thank you and encouraging you to continue doing us proud,” the governor said.
The Super Falcons head into the fixture with a comfortable 2–0 advantage from the first leg in Cotonou, thanks to goals from Chinwendu Ihezuo and Esther Okoronkwo. A win or draw in Abeokuta will secure their progression to the next stage of the qualifiers.
Governor Abiodun also highlighted his administration’s investment in sports infrastructure, noting that hosting the match in Abeokuta reflects Ogun State’s growing role as a hub for national and international sporting events.
“This stadium and our ongoing sports projects are designed to make Ogun a center of sporting excellence. The Super Falcons’ presence here is proof that we are on the right track,” he added.
Team officials and players expressed appreciation for the governor’s support, promising to repay the gesture with a victory.
Coach Justin Madugu, speaking ahead of the clash, said the financial boost would further motivate the squad but warned against complacency.
“We appreciate the governor’s generosity, but we know the real work is on the pitch. Our focus remains on securing qualification in front of the home fans,” Madugu stated.
