US Visa Restrictions Won’t Affect Nigeria–US Relations — Minister Idris

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has clarified that the recent visa restrictions announced by United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio have no bearing on Nigeria’s diplomatic ties with the US.

Idris explained that despite the targeted sanctions, the long-standing relationship between both nations remains solid and unaffected.

The US government had earlier disclosed that it would impose visa restrictions on Nigerians alleged to have financed or supported acts of genocide against Christians in Nigeria.

Nigeria–US Ties Remain Firm

Speaking during an interview on Arise Television, Idris emphasized that every sovereign nation holds the right to determine its visa policies, stressing that such decisions do not automatically translate into diplomatic strain.

“Visa decisions are the prerogative of each country,” Idris said. “Whether it’s the American government, the Nigerian government, or any other nation, every country reviews and applies its visa policies when necessary.”

Diplomatic Cooperation Continues

Addressing concerns that recent tensions may have weakened bilateral relations, Idris stated that both governments remain in active communication and are jointly working through any outstanding issues.

He said: “Government-to-government, Nigeria and the United States are still collaborating closely to resolve any grey areas.
