Uriel Oputa Slams Age-Shaming Culture in Nigeria, Calls It “Disgusting” and Disrespectful

Reality TV star and wellness advocate Uriel Oputa has issued a sharp condemnation of what she describes as the growing trend of age-shaming women in Nigeria, calling the practice “disgusting” and “an insult to God.”

In a strongly-worded video shared with her followers via Instagram, the former Big Brother Naija housemate criticized the tendency of some Nigerians—particularly men—to mock women over their age, appearance, or biological clock.

She argued that such ridicule reflects societal immaturity and a lack of emotional depth.

“Mocking a woman for aging is disgraceful. It shows a lack of character,” Uriel said.

“Aging is a blessing, not a curse. It is a gift from God. If you’re mocking someone for getting older, you’re mocking God’s design.”

“I’d Rather Age Than Be Six Feet Under”

Uriel, known for promoting fitness and mental health awareness, emphasized that growing older should be seen as a natural and honorable process, not something to be ridiculed.

“I’d rather be alive and aging gracefully than six feet under with wasted potential,” she added, noting that society often puts unfair pressure on women to look young indefinitely.

She also encouraged women to take pride in their journey and reject societal narratives that tie their worth solely to youth or appearance.

Gendered Criticism and Cultural Norms

The statement has sparked conversation online, particularly around the double standards women face in Nigeria.

While men are often applauded for aging into perceived maturity or success, women, especially public figures, are frequently subjected to public scrutiny over their looks and age.

Uriel questioned why men feel entitled to comment on women’s bodies, marital status, or fertility timelines—issues she said are deeply personal and not public concern.

Reaction

The comments have drawn wide support across social media platforms. Many women praised Uriel for speaking up against what they described as a long-standing culture of ageism and misogyny.

However, some online users disagreed, accusing celebrities of being too sensitive to public opinion. Still, the broader response has been one of solidarity, with calls for society to evolve beyond toxic gender expectations.
