Umuahia Shuts Down in Solidarity with #FreeNnamdiKanu Protest

The city of Umuahia, capital of Abia State, experienced a complete shutdown today as residents, traders, and students withdrew from their daily activities in solidarity with the #FreeNnamdiKanu protest.

The demonstration, led by human rights activist Omoyele Sowore, advocates for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who has been in detention since 2021.

Economic and commercial activities were paralyzed as shops, markets, banks, and petrol stations remained closed. The usually bustling streets of Umuahia were notably deserted, with only a few tricycles and vehicles occasionally passing by.

Residents expressed their discontent over Kanu’s continued incarceration, citing concerns over his health and the legal processes surrounding his detention.

The protest has garnered widespread support across the southeastern region, with various groups and individuals calling for peaceful demonstrations and urging the government to heed the calls for Kanu’s release.

The National Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has also issued a statement urging protesters to maintain peace and avoid any form of vandalism during the demonstrations.
