Umahi Gives CCECC 14-Day Ultimatum Over Substandard Aba–Port Harcourt Road

FG to Deploy Robotic Technology for Underwater Bridge Inspections Nationwide

In a decisive move to address ongoing concerns over the quality of the Aba–Port Harcourt road project, Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) to rectify identified deficiencies or face termination of the contract.

The road, a critical artery connecting Abia and Rivers States, has been under construction for several months. However, recent inspections have revealed substandard work, including uneven surfaces and inadequate drainage systems, prompting public outcry and concerns about the project’s integrity.

Minister Umahi, who conducted a thorough assessment of the site, emphasized the government’s commitment to delivering quality infrastructure. He stated, “The federal government will not tolerate any compromise on the quality of work. We have given CCECC a two-week window to address these issues; failure to do so will result in the termination of their contract.”

The 14-day notice underscores the administration’s zero-tolerance policy towards substandard public works and its dedication to ensuring that taxpayers’ money is judiciously spent on projects that meet the highest standards.

This development comes amid broader efforts by the Ministry of Works to enhance the quality and speed of road construction across the country. Minister Umahi has previously highlighted the administration’s focus on cost-effective and timely delivery of infrastructure projects, as seen in the ongoing reconstruction of the Enugu–Port Harcourt dual carriageway.

As the deadline approaches, stakeholders and residents of the affected regions are closely monitoring the situation, hoping for a swift resolution that will lead to the completion of a durable and reliable road network.
