The Delta State Police Command has apprehended two suspected robbers accused of killing an Uber driver, identified as Dantes, in the Effurun area of the state. The suspects reportedly strangled the driver with a twine rope, stole his vehicle, and later attempted to sell it.

The Gruesome Incident

According to Delta-based activist Israel Joe, who shared the details on Facebook, the suspects hired a commercial sex worker before engaging the Uber driver for their trip. While en route to their destination, the situation turned fatal when the suspects allegedly carried out their plan to murder the driver.

Joe explained:
“As they approached Aziza Junction after Mercy Land Church, one suspect, described as fair-skinned, brought out a thick twine rope and strangled the driver from behind. Meanwhile, the other suspect, dark-skinned, held a knife to the prostitute’s neck, warning her not to make a sound.”

After killing the driver, they reportedly pushed his body out of the vehicle and drove off. The suspects later spared the sex worker, dropping her off on the expressway, where she had to walk back to town in the dead of night.

A Pattern of Violence

The suspects were also accused of attacking another driver. However, their second victim managed to escape unharmed. The suspects attempted to strangle the driver, but he pushed his car seat back, bent it backward, and fled the vehicle.

Arrest and Recovery of Stolen Vehicle

The suspects’ downfall came when police tracked a stolen phone to their location. Investigators discovered that they had transported the stolen vehicles to Agbor and Warri, attempting to sell them.

Joe revealed:
“They took the car to Agbor and put it up for sale. They then went to Benin, where they attempted to strangle another driver, who managed to escape. They later returned to Warri, where they again tried to sell the vehicle.”

Police Confirmation and Investigation

The Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, confirmed the arrest during a telephone conversation.
“Confirmed,” he said, without providing additional details.

The suspects remain in custody as the police continue their investigation into the case.

Public Reaction and Call for Justice

The murder of the Uber driver has sparked outrage and calls for justice from residents and activists. Many have condemned the increasing rate of violent crimes in the area and urged law enforcement agencies to take decisive action against such perpetrators.

This case serves as a grim reminder of the risks faced by ride-hailing drivers and underscores the need for enhanced safety measures and community vigilance. The Delta State Police Command has assured the public that efforts are ongoing to ensure the suspects are prosecuted and justice is served.
