A commemorative gold coin bearing the likeness of U.S. President Donald Trump has been approved by a federal advisory body, sparking criticism and political debate across the United States.
The design was endorsed by the United States Commission of Fine Arts, a panel reportedly appointed during Trump’s administration. The coin is part of activities marking America’s 250th anniversary.
Design and Symbolism
Images circulating in the media show the proposed coin featuring a portrait of Trump on one side, depicted standing with clenched fists behind a desk. The reverse side includes a spread-winged eagle perched on what appears to be a bell—symbolic of American independence.
The commemorative coin will not carry a face value, and its official sale price has yet to be announced. However, similar collector coins produced by the U.S. Mint have historically sold for over $1,000.
Mixed Reactions
The approval has drawn sharp criticism from Democratic opponents, who argue that featuring a sitting president on a commemorative coin raises ethical and historical concerns.
Despite the backlash, U.S. Treasurer Brandon Beach defended the move, describing the coin as a tribute to national identity.
“We are thrilled to prepare coins that represent the enduring spirit of our country and democracy,” he said, adding that there was no figure “more emblematic” for such a design than the sitting president.
More Coins Planned
Officials also revealed that the design differs from two other Trump-related coins currently in development—a $1 circulating coin and a separate one-ounce gold coin.
The United States Mint is expected to release further details on production and distribution as preparations for the 250th anniversary celebrations continue.
The development underscores the increasingly politicised nature of national commemorations in the U.S., as debates grow over symbolism, leadership, and historical legacy.
