Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has challenged his teammates to draw inspiration from Saudi Arabia’s remarkable World Cup performance, urging the Nigerian side to adopt the same fighting spirit as they prepare for upcoming international competitions.
Troost-Ekong, who plays his club football in Saudi Arabia, made the remarks while reflecting on the Super Eagles’ ambitions ahead of the next Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
“Saudi Arabia showed the world what belief and unity can achieve,” Troost-Ekong said. “It’s not always about having the biggest names. It’s about discipline, teamwork, and the courage to believe you can beat anyone.”
A Lesson in Belief and Discipline
The defender pointed to Saudi Arabia’s famous upset victory over Argentina at the 2022 World Cup as an example of what determination and collective effort can produce.
He noted that while Nigeria has long been blessed with individual talent, success on the biggest stages requires more than star power.
“We have quality players across Europe,” he continued. “But football is not only about skill. It’s about mentality, preparation, and how much you want it. That’s what Saudi Arabia showed the world.”
Building on AFCON Experience
Nigeria came agonisingly close to glory at the last AFCON, finishing as runners-up. Troost-Ekong believes that experience should serve as both motivation and a reminder of how narrow the margins are at the top level.
“We were close last time,” he said. “That pain should drive us. We’ve learned the lessons — now it’s time to apply them.”
Eyes on the Future
With the AFCON fast approaching and World Cup qualification in focus, the 31-year-old captain says the Super Eagles must combine talent with tactical maturity if they hope to reclaim their status among Africa’s elite.
Troost-Ekong emphasised that Nigeria’s path to success depends on consistency and belief, adding that the team’s unity will be key in the months ahead.
“Every training, every match, we must think like champions,” he said. “We’ve seen what’s possible. Now it’s our turn.”
A Call to the Fans
The former Udinese defender also had a message for the fans, urging them to keep faith with the team as they continue their rebuild.

“The support from Nigerians everywhere means everything to us,” he said. “We play for the flag, for the people. With everyone behind us, we can achieve great things.”
